RHS Tatton Show 2006: Recycled Plastic

Made from high impact polystyrene cups from the Save-a-cup scheme, a measured amount of shredded vending cups are put into a mould then heated to up to 180°C and at pressures up to 1000 tons. Making sheets this way from waste materials uses between 50% and 70% of the energy that would be used to create sheets from virgin material. The plastic is not completely melted so gives off no noxious or harmful fumes whilst it is being pressed.

It gave a stunning black backdrop to the colourful garden planting:
